You’ve got down what interviewers LOVE candidates do or say Part 1. It’s time for a quick refresher on what interviewers HATE candidates do or say.
As a reminder, we polled a number of athletic directors, sport administrators, coaches and more to find out things they hate that potential hires do before, during and after the interview.
After you read this, if you want to add to the list, feel free to jump on Rising Coaches social media and add a few things you HATE as well.
Hate even prior to a job being open -- hit you up everyday. Send “good luck texts”. Head coaches and assistants know what you are doing. Sure - the coaches are flattered, but respect game day and not cluttering our inbox. It shows poor emotional intelligence
Hate cliches and candidates who over communicate -- don’t talk, talk, talk or give long answers.
Hate when they know everything. KNOW IT ALL about Compliance, Academic, Training Room, Marketing, Fundraising, Campus, etc. As a head coach - regardless of your assistants, the program is YOURS!
Hate when you think I owe you a job. Act appreciative of the time and effort it took to consider you as a candidate. Respect the process.
Hate win at all costs attitudes. Won’t solve problems without advancing them through proper protocol.
Hate when the focus sounds like it’s solely on the game, not the people.
Hate when people overuse social media. If you are tweeting 15 times a day, how do you have time to do anything else?
Hate when people approach coaching like you are selling a car
Hate when candidates bash a previous staff. Cast a vision and tell us what you can do. You can’t control what a previous staff has or hasn’t done.
Hate when you bash where you have been.
Hate when they have too many people reaching out on their behalf prior to the interview.
Hate those that only want to hire friends and loyalists - rather than hiring to balance weaknesses.
Feel like you have a few of your own, feel free to jump on Rising Coaches social media and add a few things you HATE as well.
